The Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act 2016 is the most significant change to Scots Law since the similar act of 1980 . The 2016 Act provides additional rights and entitlements for suspects and accused persons. This Act affects all aspects of Criminal investigation in Scotland and places additional responsibilities on the Police and Specialist Reporting Agencies.

In addition codes of practice governing identification , interviewing and general investigatory conduct will also come into force ensuring that any investigation undertaken conforms to them.
